Protect your bank accounts online

22 July 2008

It's important to remember that you must try to protect your bank accounts when using online banking. While your bank takes many precautions to protect the details of your bank accounts, you must also be responsible and have safeguards in place to protect yourself.

Never respond to emails claiming to be from you bank and never follow any links in the email. Banks do not send out emails to their customers. This is most likely a phishing scam. Never give out details of your bank accounts to anyone.

Protect the passwords of your bank accounts. Make the passwords hard to guess. Try using a mixture of letters and numbers. Change passwords on a regular basis. Try to make your security questions difficult.

Look for the padlock in the right hand corner to make sure the site is secure.

Install reputable virus checkers, spyware detectors and firewalls and use them on a regular basis. Keyloggers can track the details you enter into your bank accounts when you're using online banking.
